INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE:

Gareth Evans is one of the nation’s leading eDiscovery litigators and advisors.  As a seasoned attorney, he has made hundreds of court appearances and taken and defended hundreds of depositions.  Gareth enjoys being at the “tip of the spear” representing clients in contentious and high stakes disputes.  He has represented clients in numerous industries including financial services, accounting, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, insurance, energy, gaming, manufacturing, and technology.  Gareth is passionate about eDiscovery and information law, tenacious in the courtroom, and enjoys helping his clients identify and obtain the best outcomes inside and outside of the courthouse.

Some of Gareth’s recent experience includes:

  • Serving as eDiscovery counsel in highly contested, high-profile litigation in the gaming industry, including investigation, preservation, and collection of relevant ESI, formulating technology assisted review strategies, defending his client’s review and production processes in court proceedings, and challenging the adequacy of the opposing party’s processes
  • Taking the lead role in handling electronic document discovery and discovery disputes in securities litigation involving numerous custodians on behalf of one of the world’s largest automobile manufacturers
  • Pursuing spoliation claims and taking depositions of the opposing parties’ key executives and expert in a healthcare fraud case in which his client obtained a $34 million jury verdict at trial
  • Advising clients on defensible disposition, data remediation and records retention policies and practices, appropriately scoping legal holds, and evaluating and implementing legal hold technology solutions
  • Developing strategies for expedited and cost-effective search and review of large document populations, and finding key facts early in investigations and litigation, using technology assisted review and other methodologies
  • Serving as a key team member in In re McDermott International, Inc. (Bankr. S.D.Tex.), where Redgrave LLP acted as Discovery counsel for debtor, energy industry provider of engineering, construction, and installation services, restructuring $9.2 billion in prepetition debt

Prior to joining Redgrave LLP, Gareth was a partner at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP for 20 years and a lawyer with the Firm for 28 years, focusing on eDiscovery, information law, complex business litigation, and governmental investigations.  He was a founder and chair of the firm’s eDiscovery and Information Law Practice Group and the lead author and editor of the firm’s highly acclaimed eDiscovery Year-End and Mid-Year Reports.  Following law school, Gareth served as a law clerk to the Hon. Gordon Thompson, Jr. of the United States District Court for the Southern District of California.

Chambers USA has recognized Gareth as a leading lawyer in the field of E-Discovery and Information Governance for several years. He is recognized by Who’s Who Legal: Litigation in the area of eDiscovery and The Best Lawyers in America©.  He is a frequently published author and speaker on eDiscovery topics.

ORGANIZATIONAL INVOLVEMENT & MEMBERSHIPS:

Gareth currently serves on the Steering Committee of The Sedona Conference® Working Group on Electronic Document Retention and Production (WG1) and is a member of the Working Groups on International Electronic Information Management, Discovery and Disclosure (WG6) and Data Security and Privacy Liability (WG11).  Gareth is also a long-standing board member, and recent Chair of the Board, of the Ninth Judicial Circuit Historical Society.

EDUCATION:

Gareth received his J.D. from the New York University School of Law and a B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley.  He is admitted to practice in California.
